The Theory of Constructed Emotion with Lisa Feldman Barrett

A brief summary clip from the Evolving Leader Podcast, featuring co-hosts Jean Gomes and Scott Allender, interviewing neuroscientist Dr Lisa Feldman Barrett about the Theory of Constructed Emotion. Dr Feldman Barrett is Professor of Psychology at Northeastern University, and Chief Science Officer for the Center for Law, Brain and Behaviour at Harvard and her work is profoundly changing our understanding of the brain, and in particular, our emotions.

Since the ancient philosophers, and into our last century of scientific endeavour, emotions have been seen as hard-wired responses to external stimuli, located in specific regions of the brain. Lisa’s evidentiary science has over-turned this age-old model which shapes everything from our current beliefs about emotional intelligence to facial recognition software widely being deployed around the world.

Mental Health for All by Involving All | Vikram Patel

People by the hundreds of millions are deeply affected by poor mental health worldwide. Across the global north and south only a fraction receive appropriate care, with close to 90 percent going untreated from the instability caused by neoliberalism, with the commodification of healthcare pushing the costs of accessing therapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists hopelessly beyond reach.

We must re-prioritize mental health and fitness as critical social infrastructure, a necessity for any functioning liberal and engaged democracy. The democratization of medical education and practice, codifying and funding a system of learned, professionally mentored and accountable peer-based healthcare is a realisable goal.

In this 2012 presentation, Prof Vikram Patel outlines a now proven approach ― training community members to coordinate mental health interventions, empowering ordinary people to care for each other.

It is an indisputable fact that generations of Black, Indigenous, and other Communities of Color around the world have succeeded in liberating themselves through cooperative labor. Instead of hero worship, rallying around cults of personality, and competing for status, we are free to choose at different path, the power is within our hands to organize as co-operators who own the means of production, economic democracy for social democracy.

Hello all, my name is Muirén (muiréan) and I’m self-funding a concept of community rooted in cultural and economic solidarity, an intentional, cooperative common sense. The ends a social movement seeks to achieve are shaped by the means it employs, so we are a cooperatively organized, sociocratically managed community of creatives supported by its own efforts.

While open to all, it is a practical vision deliberately centred on the equality and equity of violently disenfranchised BIPOC Transgender, Gender Non-Conforming, Agender/Non-Binary, and the Disabled struggling to thrive beyond systemic oppression promoted by law and custom.
